Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentina – 20 February 2015
This is part 3 of my two week stint travelling round Argentina, having just spent a couple of days in Buenos Aires then the Iguazu Falls. Ours was very much a ‘highlights’ trip, making use of internal flights to to a brisk tour of what we’d narrowed down to be our must-see places.
The Perito Moreno glacier was very much one of those, however it did lead to a debate of which excursion to do. Though a number of operators do ‘mini trek’ excursions which is a shorter 3 hours trek up the front of the glacier, one operator does what is called the ‘Big Ice Trek’ which involves a 7 hour round trip hiking up a few km up the side of the glacier, then into the glacier over the top. It’s more effort and you need to be at least moderately fit as it is a pretty brisk trot uphill, but I found it very much worth it in terms of what you see/experience on the ice. I’ll add to his post in the next few days.
